Frequently Asked Questions

Do panoramic or digital dental X-rays expose my child to high radiation?

No. Modern digital and panoramic dental X-rays use very low radiation levels. Protective measures such as lead aprons are used, and images are taken only when they are necessary for your child’s dental care.

What is the difference between digital dental X-rays and traditional X-rays?

Digital dental X-rays produce instant images, use much less radiation, and provide clearer detail compared to traditional film X-rays. This allows for faster diagnosis, better communication with parents, and more precise treatment planning.

Are there reasons not to get dental X-rays for kids?

Dental X-rays may be delayed if a child has very low cavity risk or recent images from another provider. However, avoiding necessary X-rays can allow problems to go undetected. Your pediatric dentist will recommend them only when the benefits outweigh any minimal risk.

How many dental X-rays are safe for a child?

There is no fixed number, as X-rays are recommended based on your child’s age, oral health, and risk of cavities. Digital X-rays are taken only when clinically necessary to ensure safety while providing accurate diagnosis.

Are digital dental X-rays safe for children?

Yes. Digital dental X-rays use significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays and are considered safe for children when taken only as needed. Pediatric dentists follow strict guidelines to keep exposure as low as possible.

What is a periapical X-ray and why does my child need one?

A periapical X-ray captures a detailed image of the entire tooth, from the crown to the root. It helps detect cavities, infections, or issues below the gumline that are not visible during a regular exam, allowing for early and accurate treatment.
